Little Giant Sump Pump Installation Tips
Once you have established the right sump pump sump and flow requirements and type it's time to install the pump. If you are going to install the sump pump yourself here are some tips to help you avoid some common mistakes.
Certification Always use a system that meets or exceeds the minimum electrical and plumbing standards and look for the SSPMA metrication label. This is a seal from the Sump Pump Manufacturing Association that your sump pump meets or exceeds the testing and rating standards established by the SSPMA. A certified Zoeller Sump pump is a also a good choice.
Electrical Most sump pumps including the Zoeller sump pump for residential use run on 115 -120 volt 15 amp Ac service. A sump pump must have it's own receptacle that connects directly from the circuit main breaker. The receptacle must be 3 prong grounded and a minimum of 4 ft height from the floor. Never use an extension cord to run your pump. If you have a need or concern for a backup sump pump but do not want a battery operated backup consider installing a water powered backup system, any electrical failure will trigger the water powered sump pump to automatically kick in.
Location of the pump
Install your Little Giant sump pump at the lowest part of the floor. Install in area where there are no restrictions to accuses for service and repair. If you are installing a sewage system you must provide a pipe that exits through the roof for ventilation of your system. You cannot vent through a side wall. Always use the recommended pipe size for inlet and outlet service making sure that the outlet pipe has a check valve above the pit and a 3/16'' relief hole drilled into the discharge pipe 2'' above the bottom of the discharge pipe.
This a very important point, without a relief hole the pump could airlock and even though it is running the pump will not discharge any water. Always check to make sure your discharge pipe when used with a check valve has a relief hole. Always use a cover on the top of the pit.
What Is The Cause Of Pump Failure? The leading cause for a sump pump to fail is a power failure. The second most common is a faulty float switch from sticking or just plain worn out. Check the switch frequently to make sure it is working properly along with the float assembly to ensure the float arm moves freely. Inspect the impeller for any damage or stuck debris in the blades and check the discharge screen for debris.
